Barbershop Quartet Champions down through the years…

Here is a list of the Barbershop Harmony Society’s international quartet champions by the year in which they won. Quartets can only win once, though up to two members may appear together in another quartet and compete again. A few men have won two quartet gold medals, and three men, Joe Connelly, Tony DeRosa, and Jeff Oxley, have won three.

This is quite a challenge since the music, interpretation, vowel matching and chord structure must all be rebuilt.  This is especially true when you realize the sound of the music first came from the voices of men with little to no training in the art of vocal production.  Over time development of the craft and production of The Barbershop Art Form have developed a richer more pleasing sound which enhances the overtones and makes the art form more enjoyable for everyone who hears it… for the first time or 10,000th time.

I ATTENDED THE JAN. 1955 MID-WINTER, JULY 1955 AND 1957 CONVENTIONS AND CONTESTS. MY QUARTET SANG IN A SHOW IN TELL CITY, INDIANA FOLLOWING THE MID-WINTER CONVENTION IN 1955. THE HEADLINER QUARTET WAS THE CONFEDERATES (I WILL REMEMBER FOREVER).

I AM INTERESTED IN CONFEDERATE RECORDINGS, ESPECIALLY “SAVE YOUR CONFEDERATE MONEY BOYS”. DO YOU HAVE ANY SOURCES?

    THANKS.

  4. JACK MILLS Says:

IT’S ME AGAIN WITH A LITTLE TRIVIA. THE SPEBSQSA INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT IN 1950, THE YEAR OF THE BUFFALO BILLS, WAS JERRY BEELER. HIS GRAND SON, ROBERT SUHRHEINRICH, WAS THE LEAD IN OUR QUARTET. MR. BEELER WAS THE M.C. AT THE TELL CITY SHOW IN 1955. THAT’S HOW OUR QUARTET WAS INVITED ON THE SHOW.

    THANKS AGAIN.

  5. barbershop kid Says:

I am the daughter of Michael Cox who was a part of The Innsiders who won the 1976 International Championship. Of course this was several months before I was born but grew up in the barbershop world! Love it still to this day and am passing the history and music on to my own children. I have a tenor in the making!! Thanks for your information!! Keep it up!
